Crank it up, send it down – ft Bailey Christie

Five years ago, Bailey Christie from Perth, Western Australia started out riding with a friend.  His first bike was a Toys R Us dual suspension, and now he is a gravity Enduro and Cross-Country Mountain Bike Champion.  We had chat with this self-driven and funny teen to find out his cycling story, and how he balances being a regular teen with being the best he possible can in his sport.

Why do you love cycling, and what motivates you?

I love it for the freedom, exhilaration, meeting new people and making new friends, being able to push myself, and winning those trophies.

What are some of the challenges you have overcome to reach the level you are at in cycling?

Injuries are always a challenge, and I’ve had to learn what caused them and so how to avoid them in the future. I’ve also worked hard on technique and learnt to ride more smoothly. As I’ve become more competitive, I’ve been able to get more support, which means I can ride better quality bikes.

What are some of your results and racing highlights so far?

Being the U17 Gravity Enduro State Champion two years in a row has been a real highlight.  Also winning several GE rounds and state rounds each year. I was also the U17 Cross Country State Champion.

Placing 6th in the U17 nationals after starting mid field…if only there was another lap 😃

Winning the Dwellingup 30 outright two years in a row.

Winning the Kalamunda 30, Southern Peaks 30, the Seven Gravel Race in the Three Category….all outright.

What race destination would you love to go to?

Trans Madeira 5-day Enduro Race would be awesome.

What is your big goal?

My goal is to podium at both the Gravity Enduro and Cross-Country Nationals in 2021.

To get me there, my goal is to win the State Champs for GE this year including overall 1st position.

Who do you train with?

I train mostly by myself but occasionally I ride with endurance riders.  I also include a weekly personal training session at Endurance Edge.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE race nutrition?

In the week leading up to a race, I eat well and hydrate with diluted Bindi.  I like a good low GI breakfast before each race of porridge and bananas with a coffee.  During a race, I use Bindi gels and Bindi Banana Bread Bars to keep me fuelled.  Fuel in, is so important.

HOW DO plan out meals and training nutrition?

I like to carb load the two days before races. Pasta and rice (love butter chicken)

My big tip is don’t eat the ordinary supermarket protein or energy bars…. they don’t go down well.

Do you listen to workout music?

Yes, when I am riding my stationary trainer I love Fleetwood Mac 😊 Headie One and some others.

Who inspires you?

I am self driven. I love riding my bikes, and enjoy the pleasure that I get from being on a bike. I want to be the best I can, while still enjoying being a teenager. I do follow many Enduro, Downhill and XC riders from all around the world and I take all the best bits and pieces from each one.

What is your favourite training session?

Intervals on my GE bike.

What do you do with your time when not cycling?

Build trails, walk my dog, watching MTB videos, spear fishing and snorkeling

And finally, what quote do you live by?
