I BELIEVE I CAN FLY – WITH JESS WALDRON

It’s impossible not to be in awe of Enduro rider, Jess Waldron, a young, fresh and fair faced 18-year-old rider with guts and a gorgeous smile, from Albany in Western Australia. Today I had the fortune to interview her for the Bindi Athlete Blog and as the first athlete I interviewed for the series, we sure did hit it off to a great start!

So, here’s a bit about Jess…in her own words…

Hi, I’m Jess Waldron and I am an 18-year-old Gravity Enduro rider from Albany. I have been riding mountain bikes for around 11 years. This year I took the overall series win for the Under 19 Women as well as the State Championship win. I have been using Bindi nutrition for almost two years now and love the pea protein and super greens in my smoothies with bananas and strawberries! Next year I am moving up to race in the Full Enduro category and can’t wait. Read on for a bit more about what I do.

How did you get into Enduro riding?

I started with x-country and road cycling, raced in the State Series for road racing, then when Enduro riding became quite popular in Western Australia, when I was around 16, myself and my friends got straight into it. I did a couple of races each year and then last year raced a full series.

I instantly loved the fact that it is a social sport, requiring a great amount of skill at the same time.

I enjoy the challenge of it and, no-offence to road cyclists…but I got totally bored of the smooth roads.

What would be your training tip for success?

I just ride – I don’t really have a training plan, as such, and just make it fun! If it isn’t fun, you will struggle for motivation and once you lose motivation, you will lose everything.

What do you enjoy most about racing?

The social side, as you get to meet people and see people who you don’t often get to see. Also, you can travel to new places and ride different courses with unique features and runs to race on, like the one below.

I typically ride 4 times per week, sometimes I get up at 4-5 in the morning to ride, spend the day at work, then sometimes ride in the evening, or more often than not, go to the skatepark. I just try to keep life fairly casual.

What does a typical day in the life of Jess look like?

What inspires you?

Trying to get as good as the fastest people. I want to move up to race Elite, as at the moment, I’m racing in the Under 19s. So, the Elite riders currently give me a standard to work towards, being slightly faster, but not out of reach, and something I can chase.

Where do you see yourself in sport in 5 years from now?

so work pretty hard. We have a decent track here which has some bumps and rollers, which can you jump or pump. We also have wall rides, which are great for skills and building up towards.

Do you do any work off the bike for Enduro riding? E.g. gym, x-training etc.

I guess you could count the skate park, where you can also work pretty hard. We have a decent track here which has some bumps and rollers, which can you jump or pump. We also have wall rides, which are great for skills and building up towards.

What is your best advice for people new to the sport?

Ride for fun, don’t make it something that you are forcing yourself to get better at, because improvement comes naturally, just like in anything in life. Race too, when you have the opportunity, and don’t be too serious about it, as you’ll learn from each experience.

Travel and enjoy exploring new places either on the bike or off the bike too and simply maintain the enthusiasm for it.

Why did you choose Bindi?

It’s pretty cool that Bindi is Australian made, local to Western Australia and that they have a variety of products, not just sports and training products, but also things like pancake mixes and hot chocolates!

What is your favourite way to celebrate post-race?

Going out with friends, going to the pub after the race for a meal, or going for a swim after too are all nice ways to unwind, relax and celebrate.
