introducing katie

My name is Katie Lovis and I am an ultrarunner based in Margaret River, Western Australia.

I have always loved sport and grew up rowing and always running. I moved on to triathlon after school and off the back of the rigorous rowing training, I really enjoyed the challenge it presented. When I moved to Margaret River, I discovered trail running and never looked back!

Here are some of Katie’s recent achievements:

🔵 Sandman 50 (2nd place female)

🔵 Margaret River Ultra (unfortunately battling quite serious illness but managed to finish the 80km in 10h 40m)

🔵 Pemberton Trail Fest (7km: 1st place female, 50k: 2nd place female, 21.1k: 2nd place female, fastest overall female)

🔵 Cape to Cape (Female course record of 17h 23m 57s)

Why do you love ultra-running?

I compete in ultra-distance trail running – i.e. anything that is not on the road, so I am fortunate enough to be in nature a lot. Ultra-running is basically anything over marathon distance and my longest run to date has been on the Cape to Cape Trail, which is 129km.

I consider it more of a lifestyle than a sport, as the training volume is fairly high, and the preparation is very thorough. My biggest training weeks are 150km and smallest are 70-80km.

how to you approach the mental aspect of ultra-endurance events?

I would say that 90% of the completion of some of these distances is mental if you have done the training, as it is where your mind wanders in racing that counts. Since overcoming illness and health setbacks, I have found the mental aspect a lot easier, simply because it has put challenges in perspective.

For example, in the Cape to Cape, I only really had one low point and I believe that turning negatives into positives can be your greatest tool.

What have you learnt about yourself through endurance sport?

A lot! I would probably say I have learnt more about myself in the last 18 months than at any other point in my life. I have learnt that you are capable of doing anything that you want to, you just have to want to do it.

Holding myself accountable to this belief over the past 18 months has helped me achieve a lot. I constantly remind myself that if I want to do something, there is absolutely no reason I can’t.

What has been your most rewarding moment in ultra-running?

Running the entire Cape to Cape only a couple of weeks ago and breaking the female course record! The trail runs from Cape Leewin in Augusta to Cape Naturalist in Dunston and is one of the most incredible trails. People come from all over the world to hike it and I am lucky enough to live close to it. The previous fastest female time was 18.5 hrs, so all I wanted to do was get close to it, but I had an incredible day and ran it in 17hrs 50 mins.

were you always destined to be a runner?

I have always loved sport. All I have ever wanted to do is keep moving and be in nature. I would say that I was never the most talented athlete growing up, and rowing definitely highlighted this, as I often felt like I was doing twice as much to get to the same level as others. I am now I am so grateful for the experience though, as, whilst a lot of people who were naturally gifted gave up, I developed the drive to work harder and improve. As you can imagine, this has served me well in ultrarunning, where hard work beats talent any day.

What are your tips for people looking to live a healthier lifestyle?

🔵 Get moving and get outside!

🔵 Start small and build naturally.

🔵 Make sure you enjoy what you are doing!

Why do you choose Bindi?

I choose Bindi because it is a locally made product, very well made and it agrees with my stomach. I believe in Bindi the company, and I believe in the vision that Belinda has created. Bindi supports so many local events too and I feel really inspired by that.
