Top Things to do in Busselton in Ironman Week

people preparing to swim

There is no doubt that Busselton in December is absolutely buzzing.  The town is fills with Ironman athletes clad in compression gear… the foreshore bursts with marquees and red carpet… and the atmosphere is electric.  Although this year may look a little different in Busselton, it is sure to be an exciting week.

As a triathlete AND a local, this must be my favourite time of year – right in the heart of Bindi territory. So, to save you wandering town aimlessly, here is a list of the ‘go-to’ places to visit in Busselton… so you can spend more time with a long black in hand and your feet up!

Food & Drinks

Shelter Brewing Co:

Coffee and beers, what more could you need? With a front and centre view of the Busselton jetty, this brewery does great coffee and has plenty of room for bikes out the front. Plenty of pub meals and quick breakfast options here too.

Rocky Ridge:

A local brewer with a very relaxed cellar door right opposite Signal Park on the foreshore at 10 Marine Terrace. Chill in their front garden for tastings and takeaways of their latest beers on one of their 25 taps.

Esplanade Hotel:

This local icon has undergone a major refurbishment and is a family friendly, relaxed option for drinks and pub meals.  Super close to the foreshore it’s sure to be popular on race day too.

Bodega:

The foreshore favourite The Goose was sadly burnt to the ground last year. Not to be dissuaded the team have opened Bodega in the centre of town, offering a delicious tapas style menu with a stylish wine bar feel.

The Good Egg:

This café is tucked away in town but it’s great for a delicious meal or coffee. It has a bike rack, plus an upstairs work hub so if you like to combine travel/racing/work then it is the perfect spot to head for a quiet moment.

Coco’s Thai:

This small local Thai eatery can get super busy, so be sure to book a table or just grab a takeaway and head to the foreshore to watch the sunset. Fresh & delicious!

Best training Spots:

Swimming:

There is a shark net around the small jetties to the west of the main jetty so you can get a safe ocean swim done – one lap around is about 450m. Our local Geographe Leisure Centre has a 25m outdoor poor if you prefer for your race week swim. Look out for plenty of pro-action here too!  There is a sauna and spa too if that’s your jam. The centre also has a great gym for family/friends travelling with you.

Running:

The Busselton foreshore is the place to do all your taper-week runs and athlete spotting. Finish with coffee at Shelter with a playground close by for the kids, or the Gosling take-away van which is near the skate park if the kids prefer that.

Cycling:

Try and keep off the main Bussell Highway and stick to Geographe Bay Road, heading out through Wonnerup through the beautiful Tuart Forest. This is where the Ironman course is, so you will find smooth roads and plenty of other athletes rolling out there too.

Ironman Essentials & Shopping

Supplement Mart:

If you need any race day hydration or gels, pop into Supplement Mart on West St where you will find plenty of Bindi products alongside their huge range of nutrition. isk of upsetting your digestion, and so you should stick to what you know.

Supermarkets:

The centre of town is just a short walk from the foreshore and has multiple supermarket options including Coles and Woolies.  Just be prepared early to get Ironman essentials like bananas – they can sell out very quickly!

Western Grower’s Fresh:

This popular farmer’s market is right at the big roundabout on the causeway as you enter town. There are beautiful ready-made salads and healthy meals (including vegetarian options) and fabulous local produce. Right next door is a takeaway coffee drive-through Yahava – so if you are looking to avoid the busy town centre you can get most of your healthy supplies out here!

Origins Market:

This market is brand new in town and has a huge range of local producers and artisans all under the one roof.  Perfect for gift shopping or tasting local goodies, there are plenty of food options here too. A great way to feed the family or a group of hungry athletes, Origins is near K-Mart in the Power Centre and is open Thursday- Sunday.
